A few years ago polymer engineers accidentally invented a kind of plastic cord that ties itself into knots when a short length of it is placed in a small, enclosed place like a jacket pocket. For some time nobody could think of any practical use for this material, then the consumer electronics industry bought it and used it to sheathe the cables of earbud headphones.
